About Image Metadata Viewer

Inspect the hidden metadata embedded in your image files. View core properties such as dimensions, file size, and color mode, plus EXIF data from JPEGs: camera make and model, focal length, aperture, ISO, shutter speed, GPS coordinates, and capture date. All processing is done locally — nothing leaves your browser.

Use Cases

Checking whether a photo contains GPS location data before sharing, verifying camera settings for a specific shot, confirming image dimensions before uploading to a platform, stripping metadata by re-saving through the converter, investigating image provenance for journalism or legal purposes.

How It Works

Reads basic image properties (dimensions, file size, MIME type) using the File API and HTML Image element. For JPEG EXIF data, the tool manually parses the APP1 marker segment in the file binary using a DataView, following the TIFF/EXIF specification.

FAQs

Do all images have EXIF data?

Only JPEG (and TIFF) files typically contain EXIF metadata. PNG, WebP, and BMP files store minimal metadata. Screenshots and downloaded web images often have no EXIF at all.

Can I remove the metadata?

Re-saving the image via the Image Converter tool strips most embedded metadata, as the canvas export does not write EXIF headers.

Is GPS location always present in phone photos?

Only if you had location services enabled for the camera app when the photo was taken. Modern iPhones and Android phones embed GPS by default unless you disable location for the camera.
