Does it work on scanned PDFs?
No. Scanned PDFs are images without a text layer. Only text-based PDFs (with a selectable text layer) can be counted.
Is the word count accurate?
Very accurate for standard PDFs. Complex multi-column layouts may have slight variations due to how PDF.js extracts text.
